Adam, an English teacher in a language college, has discovered a book of magic, in the basement of a derelict property he has purchased, in the village of Littledon, in Essex. Events have led him to believe that the three crayfish in his garden pond are three women, rumoured to have disappeared from the house under mysterious circumstances. The local pub called ‘The Three Witches’ is in fact named after them.
Adam is buoyed by his recent victory over an evil warlock Bruce, who had tried to grab the book. He decides to try out a spell, to return one of the crayfish back into its human form and Eve turns up naked at his back door.
Adam discovers she is a witch and finds there is a prophecy that the power of the three witches and the Master will surpass all other comparable powers. Adam suddenly realises he is being watched and somebody has broken into his highly protected house looking for the book. Worried about his own fate, Adam tries to hide his knowledge of magic and the book from Eve, as she tries to adjust to life in present day London.
Adam takes Eve to his friend Dick’s posh party in Highgate, where Eve attracts the attention of a BBC producer, Jenkins, whose associate Carl Black is making a documentary into the paranormal. Jenkins offers to help Eve get a job at the BBC and to meet Black.
While at the party, Adam again gets the feeling of being watched. He becomes worried that the Master is watching him and his days may be numbered. He needs to find the answers for his survival.
